What Makes Supercross Racing Different from Motocross Racing

In the world of off-road motorcycle racing there are various different variants to the general form of racing. Motocross and supercross are the two more general forms of racing in this class. There are some differences between supercross racing and motocross racing though. It can easily be seen as to how supercross racing is significantly different.

First, here's a look at what makes motocross racing different in the world of off-road motorcycle racing. Motocross takes place in outdoor venues on tracks that are about two miles in length on average. Various different obstacles are featured in this form of racing, including jumps, corners and various obstacles. Various man-made obstacles are featured in motocross racing as well. Large levels of dirt are generally used to make these obstacles. Also, tens of racers, usually thirty to forty of them, will participate in an individual race. Of course, since the tracks are outdoors they will be in mostly rural areas and away from major cities.

Supercross racing is different from motocross racing in various different ways. First, the locations of these races are in much larger areas in that the races take place in indoor arenas. For instance, places like the Allstate Arena in suburban Chicago or the Air Canada Centre in Toronto will have these events at various times of the year. This means that more people have access to these events in that they are all in larger areas of the world. Because these tracks are all indoors it should be noted that the courses are not natural but man-made. Also, the size of a typical supercross track will be much smaller than that of a regular motocross track because of the limitations of the arena's size.

With the shorter track involved in supercross there will be fewer racers as a result. About twenty or so riders will be participating in an average supercross race. Plus, there are generally shorter times for racing in this form of off-road motorcycle racing because of the short tracks.

There are some similarities though. The same bikes are used in motocross and supercross races. The same goals are used in that the drivers all have the goal to finish first in a race. Safety equipment used in each form is the same as well. Obstacles in the courses can be the same as well, especially since the same surfaces are used in these races.

Supercross racing is indeed different from motocross racing. The tracks in supercross are smaller and there are fewer riders in supercross at once. However, there are some similarities involving the bikes and safety equipment that are used in the sports. Even though they are both different they are still exciting forms of off-road motorcycle racing.
